Cloth Diaper Snap Types for Replacement and Repair.

May 26, 2022 by HomesteadingChicks Leave a Comment

Currently I run a successful 5 star Etsy business which is heavily invested in cloth diapers. When I started researching cloth diaper snap types and sizes I had a small toddler at home who could only be cloth diapered. He exclusively wore USA made Smartipants cloth diapers that we had purchased used. Over the past 3 years I have purchased, tested and cataloged diapers by snap type and size for my products on Etsy. This includes Grovia and Alva! I’ll add a full list later in this post. The most current version will be at www.etsy.com/shop/homesteadingchicks on the diaper snap product listings. I currently replace snaps, use all of these snaps for new product production and repair cloth diaper snaps and elastic.

How I started this snap research:

My husband suggested we start making cloth diaper extenders in 2020 when we saw the cloth diaper market run out. Companies were back-ordering their regularly stocked products and the used cloth diaper market was hot and fast. Most of the cloth diaper groups I was in would have mamas desperate for a solution to their toddlers outgrowing the cloth diapers before fully potty training. We would soon be potty training our own cloth diapered kid so it felt like a tug to help figure out a solution. There was a product on Etsy that came up in a search but it didn’t have good reviews. I had always wanted a commercial snap press for my own crafting but I could not justify the price while we were both in full-time welding school. My business has since invested in new diapers to check different brands and sizes of snaps to repair cloth diapers and make cloth diaper extenders which can also be used for training pants conversions.

Grovia Snaps:

Grovia cloth diaper snaps are Kam size 19. I can only purchase them through www.ilikebigbuttons.com Gena is fantastic to work with! It’s a small family business that is authorized to sell true Kam brand snaps. They are considered industrial type (size 19) and hold up better than anything else. I started doing Velcro to snap conversions of Grovia diapers next by customer request. Then it was diaper elastic replacement but I’ll explain that another time. Grovia diapers hold up very well to use over several years and for several children. I sell kits to do the repairs yourself at home on my Etsy shop. Or you can hunt down the parts yourself on I Like Big Buttons. I have not found any other vendor that sells the actual product I’m describing. They are just not quite right, like any from Amazon.

Alva type snaps:

ALVA diaper snaps are from a different factory and mold. They are slightly different in dimensions but they are called size 20, like the most commonly used Kam snaps. We had to use calipers from our machinist tool box to find the difference. Just different enough that Kam snaps don’t hold! I have found these snaps are the only ones to consistently work for this portion of my diaper list. By clicking the blue link you will go to my personal favorite listing on Amazon, who is the actual manufacturer of these exact snaps. They can be brittle so be careful squishing or setting the snaps. Too much pressure will crack them. They are made from a different recipe of plastic. https://amzn.to/3DBukgR

Kam Snaps:

KAM snaps are the most common, name brand, and good sturdy snaps in general. The Kam snaps used on this portion of my list are size 20 as well. I only purchase Kam snaps from https://kamsnaps.com/ or https://ilikebigbuttons.com/. The sellers on Amazon that have a shop name of Kam or Kam shop are not legitimate. Kam snaps come in lots and lots of colors. One store has more colors the other store does emgraved designs. It’s a whole rabbit trail. One piece at a time. If I were to convert a cloth diaper of any type from Aplix or Velcro to snaps ON A BUDGET I would definitely buy only Kam snaps. You don’t need the large commercial use, table-top press to do the job. You can use snap pliers. Kam sells snap pliers and so do the Alva type brand.

Well, that’s it guys. That’s the secret I’ve been keeping for all this time while I figured all of this out. I am constantly adding to my new diaper bin and it’s the biggest tote I could find. Could honestly be a bathtub it’s so huge! I am contacted about a few times a month to check out other brands and I’m still interested in expanding my list. If you ever have any questions for me do not hesitate to ask! The only link I may receive a small commission from is the Alva type snap link above because I am an Amazon Associate for the purpose of supporting my family while I share my findings. I only post links to items I actually own and use.
